NEW: The National Science Foundation (NSF) – EOP Dear Colleague Letter
We’re thrilled to announce that The Lemelson Foundation is partnering with the NSF to amplify and accelerate the integration of sustainability across engineering programs nationally. Over three years, The Lemelson Foundation will provide up to $3 million to co-support qualified engineering education projects selected by the NSF Research in the Formation of Engineers program. Applications for the ASEE EOP Mini-Grant Program Cohort III due January 10!
Funded by The Lemelson Foundation and administered by ASEE, this initiative provides financial assistance and support for educators to use the EOP Framework and accompanying teaching guides to design engineering curricula that’s sustainability focused. Grant recipients will also be connected with a supportive community of fellow educators and mentors.

NEW: ABET, The Lemelson Foundation Announce Inaugural Sustainability Award
The Lemelson Foundation and ABET are excited to announce the inaugural “ABET and The Lemelson Foundation Engineering for One Planet (EOP) Innovation in Sustainability Award.” This award, which comes with a $10,000 cash prize, celebrates individuals, programs or institutional teams who integrate sustainability into ABET-accredited programs, fostering innovation in education. Applications are due April 20, 2024. Learn more here.
New Resources
New EOP Framework Teaching Guide
We’re pleased to introduce a new resource to accompany the EOP Framework: “13 Step-by-Step Ideas for Integrating Sustainability into Core Engineering Courses.”
This valuable guide provides engineering faculty at all levels in the sustainability field with key learnings and experience-based strategies. It was prepared in partnership with ASEE and co-created with 94 Interdivisional Town Hall participants at the ASEE 2023 Annual Conference.
VentureWell EOP Webinar
Looking to learn how educators are implementing the EOP Framework at their higher education institutions? In September, VentureWell hosted a webinar with a panel of five faculty members to share their insights and experiences. The panelists — representing The University of Texas at Tyler, The University of Central Florida, Old Dominion University, North Carolina A&T State University, and City University of New York (CUNY) — discussed their learnings from the ASEE 2023 Conference and shared effective, experience-based strategies from the engineering programs at their respective higher ed institutions.

EOP Building a Pathway to Scale Article
Every action matters in the fight against climate change. But how do you bring those individual actions to scale to address the enormity of the problem? EOP Network Manager Victoria Matthew — along with network members Cindy Anderson and Cindy Cooper, and evaluator Surbhi Lipkin-Moore — have prepared an analysis of the impact and progression of the EOP initiative’s Collective Impact approach. Using the achievements of over 100 EOP Scaling for Impact workshop participants, this report offers insight into their methods and includes actionable steps to integrate sustainability into engineering curricula. They presented the article at the ASEE 2023 Annual Conference, and you can access it here.
EOP NETWORK CONVENING
In November, the EOP Network met in Scottsdale, Arizona, for its second all-network, in-person convening, and fifth convening overall! Over two days, network members from academia, industry, and social sectors explored trends, opportunities, and challenges for bringing sustainability into engineering education, as well as projects to achieve EOP’s goals. SEFI 2023 Annual Conference – Ireland
In September, Lemelson Foundation Senior Program Officer Cindy Cooper traveled to Dublin, Ireland, for the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI) 2023 Annual Conference, where she took to the stage alongside collaborators from ABET, Engineers Without Borders UK, and the Engineering Professors’ Council, to showcase several tools that are making it easier to integrate sustainability into engineering education. Siemens summarized one of the sessions in this post, which includes links to the tools.
World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) – Mexico
In October, EOP Strategy Consultant Cindy Anderson took EOP to this year’s World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) in Monterrey, Mexico, sponsored by the Global Engineering Deans Council, a global network of leaders in STEM innovation.
GSU Study Abroad Program – Greece
In November, EOP Network member and Northeastern University Professor Dr. Bala Maheswaran brought the EOP message to Athens, Greece, at a conference hosted by Georgia State University and the Athens Institute for Education and Research. “Education in Greece: The Impact of Historical and Cultural Contexts” focused on international, cross-disciplinary approaches to education and research, and Dr. Maheswaran discussed the important role of engineers and engineering education to create a sustainable future.
American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists® (AAEES) Webinar
Cindy Anderson also brought EOP to the largest professional organization for Environmental Engineers and scientists — the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists® (AAEES) — presenting at their virtual webinar sponsored by ABET.

PBS – “Power Trip: The Story of Energy”
Check out “Power Trip: The Story of Energy,” a new series that takes a fascinating and comprehensive look at humanity’s relationship with energy — and leaves us with hope for a sustainable future through innovation. It features Michael E. Webber, whose book inspired the series, and who is a professor of engineering at EOP grantee The University of Texas at Austin, and was also a member of the EOP Advisory Group. Episodes range in topic from exploring space to addressing climate change and environmental protection. It can be viewed on PBS or streamed on a number of platforms. Learn more here.
